Newland - The Cathedral of the Forest

All Saints Church, Newland - The Cathedral of the Forest

Newland is a picturesque village in the Royal Forest of Dean bordering on the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It contains a number of substantial houses, the earliest of which is said to date from 1576. The village is built around the magnificent parish church dating from the early 1200s, which is known as the “Cathedral of the Forest”.

The Ostrich Inn Public House, which dates from 1694, in the centre of the village, must be one of the most atmospheric pubs in the county. It is a free house serving real ale and a varied menu, and is often host to the morris dancers, the mummers or the wassailers, depending on the season. Until the 1960s, Newland was home to one of the largest recorded oak trees in England. In 1906, it was noted as having a circumference of 43ft 6in at 5ft from the ground.
